The Caribbean Sea is home to over 700 islands, islets, reefs, and caves, distributed over 26 countries. Still, only 2% of those islands are actually inhabited. The Caribbean is known as one of the world’s prime yachting locales, due to its relatively still waters. Though the region is not known for its budget-friendly traveling, backpacking in the Caribbean can still be affordable, when steering clear of high-profile islands such as the celebrity magnet Saint Barthélemy.
Life on the islands is relatively cheap when avoiding the touristic hotspots, and on Puerto Rico or the Antilles, you’ll even find propper youth hostels. With the right strategy, even Cuba and Jamaica can be traveled on a relatively low budget. Eat local, go CouchSurfing, and stay off the beaten path to enjoy the rich culture and natural wonders of the Caribbean, without breaking the bank.
