Alien plushie characteristics
There’s no set of characteristics representing the typical alien plushie, as there is for other plushies such as bunnies or pigs. Popular media has seen the creation of uncountable aliens, ranging from incredibly cute humanoid creatures to scary monsters. We’ve listed a few of the more popular ones for you.
Famous Aliens (available as stuffed animals)
Grogu (a.k.a. the Child)
Grogu plushies – for a long time known as ‘Baby Yoda’ plushies – are modeled after the character of ‘the Child’ from the Disney+ TV series The Mandalorian (2019-). The little alien was an instant fan-favorite the moment he first appeared on screen, and Grogu plushies are in high demand.
Grogu is the latest addition to the long line of popular aliens from the Star Wars–franchise. Other famous Star Wars-aliens who’ve had plushies modeled after them are Yoda, Chewbacca, the porgs, and Salacious Crumb.
Stitch
Stitch, also known as Experiment 626, is a blue koala-like illegal genetic experiment from outer space. In the Walt Disney animated film Lilo & Stitch (2002), Stitch became the unruly pet of Lilo after landing in Hawaii. The little alien became a smash hit and was especially popular in Japan. This led to the production of an anime series based on the franchise, titled Stitch! (2010-2011). Due to Japan’s love for stitch and the country’s general status as a pop-culture trendsetter in most of East and Southeast Asia, Stitch plushies can be found almost anywhere in the region.
E.T.
E.T. is the quiet, compassionate, and inquisitive alien from Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982). He has a stout, rotund body, a large head, long arms, and short legs, and his large head features two enormous blue eyes. Though the film came out in the early ‘80s, E.T. plushies are still sold today.
Marvin the Martian
Like many of the Looney Tunes (1930-1969) characters, Marvin the Martian became a legendary pop culture icon. The tiny extraterrestrial appeared in only 4 out of the 1,002 animated theatrical shorts produced within the series, which makes his current status as a top-favorite alien plushie even more impressive.
Rocket and Groot
Rocket, a genetically and cybernetically modified raccoon, and his tree-like humanoid friend Groot, were introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014). The pair quickly became fan-favorite characters within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After Groot sacrifices his life for the Guardians in the first film, Rocket cultivates his branches in a flower pot, leading to the introduction of ‘Baby Groot’ in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) – a character who became even more popular and spawned an additional range of merchandise, including many Groot plushies.
The Little Green Men
The three-eyed Little Green Men from Toy Story (1995) are promotional toys for the fictional Pizza Planet fast-food chain. They are featured throughout the Toy Story-franchise, where they are part of a claw game at Pizza Planet. Though being toys rather than actual aliens, they still earn their spot on this list, as they remain immensely popular as stuffed animals.
Other popular aliens
Other examples of popular aliens who’ve had plushies modeled after them are the xenomorph from Alien (1979) – both as a Facehugger, a Chestburster, and an adult; Alf from the sitcom ALF (1986-1990); and Jumba and Pleakley from Lilo & Stitch.
