About Teddy Bears

The classic teddy bear is the most popular stuffed animal out there. From its origin in the time of Theodore Roosevelt until this very day, more stuffed animals have been sold worldwide than any other type of plushie. It’s easy to understand why they are so popular: with their big eyes and soft round ears, as well as their often short, stocky arms reaching out for a hug, teddy bears are the perfect comforter. They radiate a sense of homeliness, enriching the comfortable atmosphere of the room they’re in.

Teddy bear characteristics

Common characteristics of teddy bears include large bodies with stocky legs, small rounded ears, shaggy hair, round plantigrade paws, and short tails. Though real bears often have long muzzles, teddy bears tend to have flatter, more humanlike faces.

Teddy bears are most often based on brown bears, they can also be modeled after black bears, panda bears, or polar bears, or adhere to a more fantasy-based design. Close relatives to the teddy bear are the red panda and the raccoon.

Famous Teddy Bears

There are several famous bears that inspired the design of new teddy bears. The primary example is of course Winnie-the-Pooh, the fictional anthropomorphic teddy bear created by English author A. A. Milne. Pooh was later popularized by Walt Disney in the 1966 theatrical featurette Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree.

Other iconic stuffed bears are Teddy from Mr. Bean (1990-1995), Lots-O’-Huggin’ Bear from Toy Story 3 (2010), and Pooky from the comic strip Garfield. Additionally, there are several famous bears from popular books and media franchises who aren’t portrayed as teddy bears, but are available as teddy’s, such as the British Paddington Bear, Baloo from The Jungle Book (1967), which was based on Rudyard Kipling’s 1894 book of the same name, the heart-warming Care Bears (1985-1988) and Fozzie Bear from The Muppet Show (1976-1981).
