Stuffed Animal Monsters

The creation of stuffed animal monsters is only bound by the rules of fantasy: they can literally be made in all colors, shapes and sizes. With monsters, like aliens, we may quickly think of bad creatures, but monsters can also be very sweet! Think of Cookie Monster from Sesame Street (1969) or Sulley from Monsters, Inc. (2001). In addition, for children, monster stuffed animals offer protection: because what better way to protect your child from the creepy crawlers under their bed than a monster itself?

Monster plushie characteristics

Stuffed animal monsters have no obvious characteristics that directly distinguish them from other stuffed animals. The selection is large and varies widely. Monsters come in countless different designs, colors and sizes. What is common, is that they often contain one or more scary features that we consider “monstrous,” such as long the tentacles of an octopus, the menacing teeth of a lion, the sharp horns of a goat, the wings of a dragon or a long tail like that of a dinosaur. Some plushie monsters, however, are actually designed to be funny and comical, with features such as big Bambi eyes, a wide smiling mouth and funny clothes.

Famous Monsters (available as stuffed animals)

The classics

The most famous monsters of all time are the vampire Dracula from Bram Stoker’s 1897 book of the same name, Dr. Frankenstein’s monster from Mary Shelley’s 1818 book, and the other monstrous characters that eventually found their home in the Universal Classic Monsters library, such as the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Mummy, and the Wolf Man. Cult series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997) and Supernatural (2005) modernized many of the aforementioned classic monsters.

Besides creepy classic monsters, we also know a lot of good-natured monsters thanks to American puppeteer Jim Henson: for The Muppet Show (1974), Fraggle Rock (1983) and Sesame Street (1969), he Invented numerous monsters who have the best interests of the world at heart. Just think of Cookie Monster and Elmo!

Animation

One of the most popular animated films that features many monsters is, of course, the movie Monsters, Inc. The 3D animated film follows the adventures of two monsters, the furry, blue James P. Sullivan (also known as Sulley) and green one-eyed Mike Wazowski. Sully is a classic monster, Mike a cyclops. Other monsters from the film include the lizard-like Randall Boggs, Medusa-like Celia Mae and the snail-like Roz.

Famous fellow monsters from the world of animation include the bigfoot Mr. Link from Missing Link (2019), the green ogre Shrek from the 2001 film of the same name, the arrogant Beast from Beauty and the Beast (1991), the depressed skeleton Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), the bumbling devils Pain and Panic from Hercules (1997) and the jolly B.O.B. from Monsters vs. Aliens (2009).

Pokémon

In Japan, you’ll find hundreds of the most popular and lucrative monsters of all time: the Pokémon! Pokémon is short for “Pocket Monsters,” after the original Japanese name of the franchise Poketto Monsutâ (1997). The franchise’s most famous installment is the series Poketto Monsutâ (1997). Pokémon was started by Satoshi Tajiri. There are now more than 800 species of Pokémon.

The most famous Pokémon are the electric Pikachu, fire-breathing dragon Charizard, the purple Gengar, the fiery Arcanine, the cute Eevee and the green Bulbasaur. The monsters in Pokémon are usually based on real animals, including lizards, squirrels, mice and more, but some are inspired by plants, flowers, or legendary creatures such as dragons and dinosaurs. Almost all Pokémon have been immortalized as stuffed toys at one time or another.
