About Fox Plushies

The fox plushie closed out our Top 10 most popular stuffed animals. Foxes are mostly known for their beautiful, bushy tails. They are cunning, intelligent creatures, and make for great plushie friends. In Japanese folklore, the kitsune – meaning fox – is a spirit serving as a messenger to the greater Shinto spirits. These fox spirits are believed to possess superior intelligence and magical powers, so it can’t hurt to keep one around!

Fox plushie characteristics

Fox plushies have bushy tails, often ending in a white tip. The stuffed animals feature pointy black ears and a long snout with a small nose on it. Like real-life foxes, the fur of fox plushies can range from light brown to deep red. This includes a more orange or yellow shade, which is found in many Asian fox plushies. Occasionally, you’ll find a white fox plushie, modeled after the Arctic fox, which can be found in the Arctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Fox plushies slightly resemble raccoon plushies and wolf plushies.

Famous Foxes (available as stuffed animals)

Many animals who’ve had stuffed animals modeled after them, were partly popularized by Walt Disney. The film studio’s history counts no less than three famous foxes. First came Robin Hood from the 1973 animated feature of the same name. In the film, all characters from the classic folklore tale of Robin Hood are drawn as anthropomorphic animals, with the sly Robin and his love interest Maid Marian depicted as foxes.

Disney’s second fox protagonist was Tod, the orphaned fox from The Fox and the Hound (1981) who became friends with a hound dog named Copper. Many years later, the studio would again feature an anthropomorphic animated fox as one of the main characters in Zootopia (2016): con artist Nick Wilde, who forms an unlikely partnership with rabbit cop Judy Hopps. All of Disney’s foxes were of course sold as stuffed animals, alongside many original fox plushies.
