About Cat Plushies

Though slightly less popular than dog plushies, cat plushies still find themselves at number 3 in the Top 150 most popular plushies. Whereas real cats only allow for cuddles when they feel like it, stuffed animal cats can be charmed for a cuddle session at any time.

Cat plushie characteristics

Cat plushies are often more cuddle-able than their real-life counterparts. Instead of sharp retractable claws and sharp teeth, they have soft paws and cute snouts. What they do have in common with real-life cats is their soft fur, big eyes, long tail, and pointed ears. These make cat plushies instantly recognizable.

Like with dog plushies, there are many varieties of stuffed animal cats: most cat breeds are represented in the plushie world. The most popular ones, however, are modeled after gray and white cats, such as the European Shorthair, the Scottish Fold, and the Egyptian Mau. Cat plushies are closely related to lion plushies, tiger plushies, leopard plushies, and other stuffed animals modeled after felines.

Famous Cats (available as stuffed animals)

Cats have always had prominent spots in books and films. Author James Bowen’s autobiography A Street Cat Named Bob (2013) details the story of how his life changed after meeting a stray ginger cat. Bowen went from being a homeless man and heroin addict to become a successful author. His novel was turned into a movie, and both the novel and the movie were given the sequel treatment. Meanwhile, on the internet, the American cat Tardar Sauce, nicknamed Grumpy Cat, became an online sensation. Since then, dozens of Grumpy Cat plushies have been made.

In the animated world, cats have also played major roles: from early cats such as Sylvester the Cat from the Looney Tunes (1930-1969) and Tom Cat from Tom and Jerry-cartoons (1940-1958) to modern feline heroes, such as comic book character Garfield (1978), Scratchy from The Simpsons (1989-), and Puss in Boots from Shrek 2 (2004). Though many cats in animated films take on the role of the antagonist, their plushie-versions are as cuddly as any stuffed animal cat.
